I. Eastern Europe: The “Deep Reach” Attrition Campaign
A massive escalation in aerial warfare has turned the region into a high-stakes duel over industrial and civilian infrastructure.
- The Russian Surge: Overnight into May 18, Russia launched a combined attack involving hundreds of drones and more than 20 missiles
across Ukraine. While air defenses downed over 500 targets, strikes were recorded in Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipro, where one person was killed and more than 30 were injured, including children. - Ukrainian Counter-Pressure: Kyiv responded with a large-scale long-range drone attack targeting the Ryazan oil refinery, one of Russia’s largest, which was engulfed in flames after multiple impacts.
II. Middle East: The “Tattered” Truce & Hormuz Oversight
Drones are now being utilized both to bypass and enforce unstable ceasefires across the Middle East.
- Hormuz Standoff: Iran has officially formed the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) to manage the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran intends to use this new body to oversee maritime movement and regulate passage through one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.
- Southern Lebanon Kineticism: Despite a ceasefire framework, Hezbollah published footage of an explosive drone strike that successfully hit an Israeli Iron Dome battery. In response, the IDF is transferring thousands of meters of fishing nets to border units as a low-tech countermeasure to trap incoming FPV drones.
III. Africa: Sudan’s “Invisible” Drone War
The UN has issued a dire warning: Armed drones have become the leading cause of civilian deaths in Sudan’s conflict.
- Casualty Surge: Drones were responsible for more than 80 per cent of civilian deaths during the first four months of 2026, killing at least 880 people.
- Infrastructure Targeted: Combatants are increasingly using drones to strike markets, health facilities, and energy infrastructure in the Kordofan and Darfur regions, effectively weaponizing the “rainy season” lull.
IV. Indo-Pacific: Pag-asa (Thitu) Sentinel Status
The Philippines has reached a critical milestone in its “deterrence by presence” strategy.
- Coast Guard Hub: A major new Coast Guard station is now fully operational on Thitu Island (Pag-asa). The facility provides a permanent base for patrol ships just 12 miles from China’s militarized Subi Reef.
